The Bad Girl curls a top lip and snarls at more or less everything and everyone and takes her punishment with a rotten smirk. There's no undoing the havoc she's created, no redemption for her anarchic deeds.
In the aptly-named Dark Ages, the village ne'er-do-wells (guilty or otherwise) would end up in the pillory or stocks, their head and hands trapped between boards while villagers pelted them with rotten fruit and vegetables. A wooden sign was hung around the offender's neck declaring their sin for all to see. All in all an awful way to spend a weekend.
