In the aptly-named Dark Ages, the village reprobates (guilty or otherwise) would end up in the pillory or stocks, their head and hands trapped between boards while villagers pelted them with rotten fruit and vegetables. A wooden sign was hung around the offender's neck declaring their sin for all to see. All in all an awful way to spend a weekend.
